Threat to Model Flying from European Regulation - EASA Prototype Rules for Unmanned Aircraft

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has recently launched its ‘Prototype Rules’ for the regulation of ‘unmanned aircraft’ throughout Europe.  In their current form, the proposals represent a serious threat to model flying as we know it which I cannot understate.  You can read the ‘Prototype Rules’ and the ‘Explanatory Note’ here: https://www.easa.europa.eu/easa-and-you/civil-drones-rpas The Prototype Rules are clearly written to deal with the rapidly developing area of ‘drone’ ...

Air Navigation Order 2016

The current Air Navigation Order (ANO 2009) which provides the legal framework within which model aircraft are flown, will be replaced with a new version (ANO 2016) with effect from the 25th August. Further details can be found here: http://publicapps.caa.co.uk/modalapplication.aspx?catid=1&pagetype=65&appid=11&mode=detail&id=7503 The main change for model flyers is the numbering of the relevant articles rather than their content/meaning.

BMFA National flying site and Centre - A Few Words from your Chairman…..

Events are now moving quite swiftly with regard to the Society acquiring a site to provide the basis of a National Model Flying Centre; so it seems now would be a good time to put all of this into a context which explains the powerful logic for moving forward swiftly with this important initiative. Having been closely involved with all the processes leading up to the present situation,  I am painfully aware of just how much the background and environmental issues are making model flying, as we ...

Middle Wallop Status - Update from SAM1066

A very polite letter has been received this week from the Commandant of the Army Aviation Centre at Middle Wallop that confirms SAM1066 are no longer permitted to organise & fly free flight meetings on the airfield. The reasons cited essentially relate to clauses in the license, which have been the same for many years but are now open to critical risk assessment. I have replied with an equally polite letter hopefully leaving the door open for a possible future return if circumstances change....

Free Flight at Middle Wallop

It is with considerable dismay that SAM1066 has today been informed by the local Middle Wallop Military Authorities that free flight activities at Middle Wallop are no longer allowed. This has immediate effect, such that the planned meeting for 23rd/24th April is cancelled & that further events planned for this year will not now take place. More information will be forthcoming on receipt of a formal communication from the local Military Authorities. Roger Newman (SAM1066 Sec) 19th April ...

EASA Proposals for the Regulation of Drones - the BMFA Perspective

There has been considerable discussion over recent days regarding the effect on model flying of recent EASA proposals for the regulation of 'drones'. From the BMFA perspective, the situation as it stands is that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued some draft regulations for consultation in August which outlined their thoughts on the regulation of unmanned aircraft.  The requirement for this had clearly arisen due to the surge in the use of multi-rotor aircraft (drones) by both lei...

SAM 1066 - Cancellation of November Middle Wallop Meeting and AGM. Future in question.

Meeting at Middle Wallop: 2nd November 2015 Military Attendees: Commanding Officer & Aerodrome Operator; Deputy C O; Airfield Manager. This meeting took place prior to the Airfield Users meeting, where dates for the next year were to be discussed & agreed for non military use of the airfield. Ostensibly the purpose was for me to explain who we were, how we operate, what we fly & how we are organised for events at MW. However it became quickly clear that the Military had a prior ag...
