Occupational History

Mike Colling, FSMAE, initially trained in mechanical engineering with experience in automotive, nuclear, robotics, mechanical handling and air compressors. As a Design Development Engineer he was well accustomed to following a project through from conceptual design to on site commissioning and operating

For the last ten years, Mike along with his wife Gwynedd, Hon Member, has been running his own business producing model aircraft kits and related equipment for schools, youth organisations and the BMFA. Mike also run workshops and presentations on aviation.

Modelling History

Mike started building and flying model aircraft at about the age of seven and has built and flown most classes but specialised in indoor models, both duration and scale about 30 years ago.

Mike was elected North West area delegate to the BMFA in 1970 and continued in this post until 2004 he has also been an elected member of the indoor technical committee since 1988 and held the post of council representative since 1993. Mike has been team manager for the F1D world championship team 4 times and was awarded the FAI Nile Gold Medal in 1995 for work in aviation education.

Presently mike holds BMFA posts as the Indoor Technical Committee Council delegate, NW Area Vice Chairman and Education Working Group Member.

Mike hopes to encourage more modellers to try indoor duration flying and to expand the number of indoor flying sites.
